BBM for Android and iPhone is here for free
BlackBerry are reported to be thrilled with the way Android and iPhone smartphone users have taken to the release of its BBM for iPhone and Android app. The company say that over 20 million people have so far downloaded its BBM for iPhone and Android app.
It’s been available to download for a week now and had 10 million downloads in the first 24 hours and another 1.67 million downloads per day on average for the rest of the week – making a total of 20 million downloads.
BlackBerry confirmed that it has over 80 million active users per month consisting of 60 million users with BlackBerry smartphones and 20 million with either an iPhone or an Android smartphone. The company did not declare whether the majority of the 20 million came from iPhone or Android.
The key to the success of BBM, particularly for the new iPhone and Android users , will be to see if these new users stick around or whether this was just people checking it out. It could be that all the customers who left Blackberry for Apple or Android like BBM so much they jumped at the chance of using BBM again.
Andrew Bocking, BBM VP said “One of the hidden gems of our launch that is now coming to light is our sharing tool at http://www.bbm.com/share, which helps our users quickly add new contacts to BBM”
“There is also a new way to share your PIN so that Android and iPhone customers can easily click it and add you to BBM: http://www.pin.bbm.com/. We are seeing a lot of excitement as people share PINs and get connected on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more”
3G have always liked BBM and we predict that as more and more old BlackBerry users discover that they can now get BBM on their iPhones and Android smartphones then BBM active user numbers will surge. It has the potential to eclipse the market leader WhatsApp which has over 350 million active smartphone owners using its messaging app.
