Apple iPad Mini 2 Rumour Roundup
Updated (21st October): With the iPad Mini 2 due to be unveiled today we reexamine what we know so far
Along with the iPad 5, the iPad Mini 2 is one of the most hotly anticipated tablet releases of the year and the rumour wheel is spinning at full speed as excitement builds. There’s already quite a lot of speculation about the iPad Mini 2 and when we’ll see it, so without further ado read on for all the rumours.
The only really disappointing thing about the original iPad Mini was that its display wasn’t particularly high resolution. This was all the more disappointing given that both the iPad 4 and the iPhone 5 had high resolution Retina displays.
We’ve reported before that the iPad Mini 2 is likely to have a Retina display and that’s still looking likely, after all Apple could hardly afford to not remedy the one major complaint from the original.
However while the resolution will probably change the size is likely to stay the same, specifically 7.9 inches.
The iPad Mini 2 is likely to be a similar or identical size and shape to the original iPad Mini. However the colour scheme may be different. We’ve seen an image of the tablet in ‘Space Grey’, which is one of the three new colours the iPhone 5S comes in. That suggests it’s likely to have matching colour options of ‘Space Grey’, ‘Gold’ and ‘Silver’.
Not a whole lot is known about the innards of the iPad Mini 2; however there are rumours that its camera is likely to see an upgrade, bringing it up to 8 megapixels. That would give it the same megapixel count as the camera in the iPhone 5S and may mean that it’s going to be the same camera as the one in the iPhone 5S, though that’s unconfirmed.
It’s also thought that the iPad Mini 2 will have a Touch ID fingerprint scanner like the iPhone 5S does. This would make sense assuming Apple is positioning the iPad Mini 2 as a fairly premium device as it could become the defining feature of this generation of iDevices.
Updated : A number of leaked images, and even a video, has given strong indications that Apple iPad 5 will come complete with a TouchID fingerprint sensor. Therefore, it's quite possible that it could also be included in the iPad Mini 2 - although, we're still pretty skeptical.
Release date and price
Updated: The Apple iPad Mini 2 is expected to be unveiled, alongside the iPad 5, on October 22nd. Apple have already confirmed the press event and sent out invites to the world's journalists. We'll be bringing you all the news from the event as it happens.
It had been thought that the iPad Mini 2 would be released in October or November, which would make sense as that’s around one year from when the original was launched. Rumours even pegged the announcement date for the 15th of October.
Unfortunately that’s now looking less likely as Reuters is reporting that there have been delays in producing Retina displays for the tablet, meaning that it may not be widely available until early next year.
An earlier rumour suggested that we might see two versions of the iPad Mini 2, one with a Retina display and one without. Given these production issues that may yet turn out to be true, with a budget priced Retina-free iPad Mini 2 making it this year while the full fat one comes out in early 2014, but that’s pure speculation.
When it comes to price nothing is really known, but it’s unlikely that Apple would charge much more than it charged for the original iPad Mini, so we’d image it would be under £300.
