Apple have unveiled their latest tablet creations, the Apple iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display.
The world's journalists gathered at Apple's press event in San Fransisco yesterday afternoon to learn all about Apple's next-gen tablets. We were all expecting the iPad 5 complete with fingerprint sensor and the new iPad Mini with Retina display - and we were half right.
The first to take to the stage was the Apple iPad Air, which is the replacement for the iPad 4. Everyone and his dog expected Apple's new 9.7 inch tablet to called called the iPad 5 , but the new name - referring to the devices slimmed down appearance - caught everyone by surprise.
Apple's iPad Air is the first 64 bit tablet in the world and includes the same A7 processor featured in Apple's iPhone 5S. That doubles the processor and graphics performance compared to Apple's iPad 4 and you still get the same 10 hours battery life from a single charge.
However, the biggest news is arguably the iPad Air's reduction in size and weight. The tablet adopts a similar design to Apple's iPad Mini and is 20% thinner (7.5mm), 28% lighter (453g) and has a total volume 24% less compared to Apple's iPad 4. Making it the lighest full-sized tablet on the market - even beating out Sony's super-slim, lightweight Xperia Tablet Z.
Apple's iPad Air prices start at £399 for the 16GB WiFi-only model and go all the way up to £739 for the WiFi and Cellular 128GB version. It's available to buy from November 1st and comes in a choice of 'Space Grey' or 'Silver'.
Next up was the Apple iPad mini with Retina display - or iPad Mini 2 - and the headline improvement is the inclusion of a Retina Display. Apple's compact tablet now has a 7.9 inch display that runs at a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels giving it a pixels-per-inch rating of 326 - that's exactly double compared to original iPad Mini.
The other good news is that the compact tablet comes with the same A7 processor present in the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air. Yep, that's right you get the same 64 bit architecture and that processor performance 4 times faster than the original, with graphics performance improved 8 times.
Apple iPad Mini prices start at £319 for the WiFi-only 16GB model with the top 128GB WiFi and Cellular model priced at £659. It'll be available later in November and is also available in 'Space Grey' and 'Silver'.
