The Apple iPhone 4S might not be as cutting edge as it once was but that doesn’t mean that you should overlook it. Right now there are a lot of things going for it, so before you jump on a new iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C, consider the following.
1) You can’t get the iPhone 5 anymore
Despite being older than the iPhone 5, the iPhone 4S is still available while the iPhone 5 has been discontinued. There’s actually only one newer generation of iPhone that’s currently available so in that sense the iPhone 4S maybe doesn’t seem so old after all.
2) It’s the only iPhone with a 3.5 inch screen
Both the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C have 4 inch screens and while that will probably be fine or even preferable for most people there is still a market for phones with small displays. If you fall into that market and like the idea of a phone with a 3.5 inch screen then the iPhone 4S is ideal. It’s one of the best ‘small’ smartphones around and if you specifically want an iPhone with a small screen then it’s really your only option.
3) It has a more conventional form factor than the newer iPhones
The other thing to consider is that the 4 inch screen on newer iPhone handsets is 16:9 widescreen, which is unusual in the smartphone world and something of an acquired taste. It makes them great for watching movies on but potentially a bit long and narrow for general use.
If you want a phone with a more conventional form factor then once again the iPhone 4S is a good bet.

4) It’s cheap
The Apple iPhone 4S has dropped down to the bottom of the range of currently available iPhones, which also means it’s the cheapest. It still has an RRP of £349, so it’s not exactly wallet friendly, but compared to the iPhone 5C which starts at £469 or the iPhone 5S which starts at £549 it’s positively a bargain.
5) It can be upgraded to iOS 7
iOS 7 transformed the iPhone and other iOS devices, by giving them a fresh and striking new look along with a bunch of new features. Any iOS device which can’t run iOS 7 is in danger of looking very dated very quickly.
Thankfully the Apple iPhone 4S can be upgraded to iOS 7, giving users many of the shiny new features available on an iPhone 5C or iPhone 5S. Sure, it’s less powerful than either of them but on the surface it looks much the same and can do most of the same things.

Even if Apple stop supporting the iPhone 4S soon, by having iOS 7 on board it’s still likely to look fairly up to date for a while yet, as this is the first time Apple has visually overhauled iOS and it’s not likely to do so again for quite a while.
6) It’s less plastic than the iPhone 5C
Despite being less expensive than the iPhone 5C, the iPhone 4S actually looks like a far more premium device. It has a glass back and metal edges, while the iPhone 5C is clad in colourful plastic.
Some people will like the plastic of the iPhone 5C, but it practically screams that it’s a budget device and definitely looks less stylish.
7) It’s compatible with all your old accessories
If you’ve owned an older model iPhone then you probably already have a charger or accessories which use a 30 pin cable, in which case they’ll be compatible with the iPhone 4S too, while the newer models use a new lightning connector.
Similarly if you’ve owned pretty much any recent smartphone other than an iPhone you probably have a micro SIM, which is what the iPhone 4S takes, while the iPhone 5S and 5C both use nano SIM’s.
8) It’s still a pretty great phone
Given that the iPhone 4S is a couple of years old now it’s easy to write it off as dated, but it’s actually still a very good phone. It has a Retina display with the exact same pixel density as the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, so you don’t sacrifice anything in screen quality and while it’s somewhat less powerful than either of those handsets it’s still pretty fast and slick.
While it might not be a top end handset anymore, the Apple iPhone 4S certainly stands up well as a mid range phone.
