Vodafone have announced a new "Test Drive" service which enables new customers to test how much data they'll need in their mobile package.

When taking out a new mobile contract with Vodafone you'll have 3 months to download all the applications and browse as much as you want. Then at the end of the deal you can see if the contract you've taken out will suit your data needs long-term. If not then you can change to a more suitable package that has the data you require.

If nothing else then it means new customers effectively get 3 months unlimited data. The Test Drive feature is available on over 20 smartphones that Vodafone offer on Pay Monthly deals.

We assume Vodafone are offering Test Drives because they hope that with unlimited data people will download way more than they normally would and therefore choose to move to a higher tariff at the end of the Test Drive period.

However,  some people will downgrade their data contract after the Test Drive, but we'd expect that to be less than the number who get used to using mobile data and consequently upgrade their deal.
