Nokia have announced that they are bringing their mapping application "HERE Maps" to Apple devices , as well as future Firefox OS devices. HERE Maps has been branded "the next-generation of location services" and offers walking, driving and public transport directions.
Voice-guided navigation is available when your travelling on foot, while driving and public transport navigation is available in over 500 cities. Users will be glad to hear that Nokia's application also incorporates live-traffic and incident information ensuring you don't get caught in lengthy jams.
The flagship feature of the version of HERE Maps for iOS is that maps can be made available for offline viewing. The application enables you to save an area of the map for later use which can then be viewed in 4 differing levels of zoom.
HERE Maps is built using HTML5 web-technology and a desktop version of the software is also available. This also means that the mobile version can interact closely with its desktop brother. For example, you can highlight and categorise your favourite places on the map and go and review them later on your desktop PC !
As you'd expect from any modern app HERE Maps comes with social networking features. You can easily share locations, directions or a simple link to friends using text, email or over your favourite social network.
HERE Maps will be available to download from iTunes in the coming weeks and will appear on Firefox OS smartphones next year. Furthermore, Nokia announced that they are releasing a HERE Maps API for the Android platform which will enable developers to incorporate the technology into their applications.
