HTC Desire users on Virgin Mobile can cheer as the company commences its Over The Air ( OTA ) update to Froyo, Android 2.2. The update notification will appear in your notification menu bar.
The announcement was posted on Virgin Media's support forum. This confirms that the update is only compatible with Virgin specific firmware (1.23.351.1). Customers with an earlier version of the Virgin specific firmware will need to update to 1.23.351.1 before you install Android 2.2.
Virgin Media are recommending that a Wi-Fi connection is used and that a handset backup is undertaken before commencing the download.
The Android 2.2 update includes :
- Ability to save applications to the SD card
- Compatibility with more Android Market Place apps
- Facebook updates and birthday reminders on the call screen
- Option to secure phone with PIN or password (as well as pattern)
- Use the device as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot
- Flashlight app now preinstalled (use the camera flash as a torch)
- LED light now available in camcorder mode
- HD video record
If you don't want to wait for the update to be pushed to you you can use the following menu to check for an update, Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Software Updates > Check Now.
