Nokia Takes Control of Symbian

There's been a lot going on between Nokia and Symbian lately and Nokia has now confirmed that it will take Symbian under its own umbrella and absorb it into Nokia. Of course, Symbian is the the world's most widely used smartphone platform.

The Symbian Foundation has successfully developed the Symbian ^3 operating system yet recently the Head of the Symbian Foundation, Lee Williams, stepped down just before it's official launch. Many analysts predict that as Symbian has now been effectively acquired by Nokia there are likely to be too many people and the same analysts foresee some job cuts.

Nokia is the volume market leader in smartphones and the company's commitment to the Symbian platform is unchanged and Jo Harlow, Senior Vice President, Smartphones, Nokia said  "The future of Symbian as a platform does not depend on the existence of the foundation. The changes announced by the foundation have no impact on Nokia's Symbian device roadmaps or shipping commitments. The platform powers hundreds of millions of smartphones - including our own - and we expect to deliver ongoing support and innovation benefiting the Symbian ecosystem in the future."
