3G Network for London Underground
![]() |
The London Underground looks set to get 3G and 2G signal coverage as news spreads that Transport for London ( TFL ) and a number of mobile operators thrash out the details.
The value of the contract is around £150 Million and aims to provide mobile device network coverage on the Underground. The intention is to have it fully functional prior to the Olympics.
The logical way to get good coverage underground would be to install signal repeaters all through the underground. There are no details of the number of repeaters likely to be needed but it could be hundreds.
Interestingly, BT starts a Wi-Fi trial at Charing Cross station this month ( more here ) with the aim of rolling it out across the Underground. This would be an excellent result to have both 3G coverage and Wi-Fi but at the moment there is no official release or contract for the mobile side and the Wi-Fi has to complete its trial successfully.
As soon as we hear more we will post it here.
