UK : O2 UK’s 3G HSDPA network currently covers around 85 percent of the population and it plans to make substantial improvements. O2 UK has invested five hundred million pounds in its 3G network over the last two years and has now scheduled a further investment of hundreds of millions of pounds over the coming years.

The 3G network growth and investment will accelerate growth of the 3G network and make sure its 3G mobile phone and mobile broadband customers have adequate mobile data bandwidth.

In the short term 40 new 3G sites in London by the end of 2009 and another 36 in London over the next 12 months. The rest of the UK will be added to and developed through 2010.

O2 UK confirmed that the 3G mobile industry has seen an unprecedented demand fuelled by new mobile data gobbling smartphones with an ever increasing availability of mobile applications. This can be brought home by the fact that watching a single YouTube video on a smartphone can use as much mobile data as 50K text messages sent at the same time.

“Anticipating growth in demand for mobile services, we have quarter on quarter increased investment in our voice and data networks “ said Derek McManus ( above ), Chief Technology Officer for O2.
