| M1 Showcases 3G Wireless |
27th November, 2003 |
Video telephony took the spotlight when M1's Chief Executive Officer, Neil Montefiore, placed an international video call to Tokyo and had a chat with the Chairman of Vodafone K.K. (Japan), Yoshiro Hayashi. Fun and entertainment content from M1's 3G mobile portal featured prominently in the showcase. These included music videos, movie trailers, customised TV programmes and video clips of soccer matches. For gaming enthusiasts, there were multi-player network games that allow several players to play against each other even if they are not in close proximity. Many of these applications are already available on GPRS but 3G bandwidth will result in higher delivery speed, better image quality and enhanced user experience. For the corporate sector, many applications that currently work on local leased lines can be migrated to the 3G network, potentially saving businesses time and cost. Some of the solutions featured are cameras that can be deployed to monitor construction sites and lift landing and wireless videoconferencing. Said Mr Montefiore : "Our testing of 3G related equipment, software and infrastructure is going well and today's showcase provides a good update of the progress that has been achieved so far even as it gives our customers an idea of the 3G future. We have just placed a new order for infrastructure with Nokia which will see the roll out of the 3G network beyond the central business district. Overall, I am very pleased with the 3G evolution that we have initiated that will see M1 customers enjoying a seamless transition from the current technology very soon." M1 customers and members of the public will be able to enjoy a preview of some of the 3G services such as video telephony and fun and entertainment content when the 3G showcase moves to M1's flagship store at Paragon. The showcase for the public will last for just over two weeks from 28 November to 14 December 2003. M1's partners for the 3G showcase are : Network
