Java Mobile Phone for Joggers

17th May , 2004

Europe : With the announcement by Sun Microsystems that joggers can take their own pulses using a Java-enabled mobile phone, the mobile applications companies are starting see a potential in the drive for fitness and well-being. However, taking your own pulse or getting text message reminders to take your medication are just a tiny part of the way mobile applications are being developed for the massive health sector.

A new report, MOBILE HEALTHCARE: MOBILE AND WIRELESS STRATEGIES FOR FUTURE HEALTHCARE PROVISIONING published by Baskerville, publishers of Mobile Media newseltter, points out that it is the providers of healthcare, rather than the consumers, that will be the major users of mobile healthcare applications in the future.

Phil Cain, lead author of the report, says "Mobile technology is certain to have a profound impact on . healthcare". He adds that, although the older age groups tend to be the least enthusiastic users of mobile technology, it is the needs of an ageing population that will drive an important part of mobile healthcare development. "Mobile technology will have a powerful ally in health policy makers who believe home visits can provide cheaper and better healthcare" says Cain, in particular in caring for the elderly unwell.

Case studies in the report show that mobile applications are already making significant cost and time savings in hospitals and for emergency service providers. What is clear is that the health services' sector employs large numbers and many of these could have a use mobile or wireless technology to improve their working practices - a potential goldmine for the company that can develop the right mobile applications.
