The Samsung Galaxy S4 was launched in a hail of media frenzy in Times Square, with the event being beamed to those in the Square, while inside the Radio City Music Hall - the real action took place. The Galaxy S4 is finally here and will be available to buy in the UK on 26th April but can be pre-ordered now. We see James Bond wanting one of these – and suspect he wasn't far away last night.
The cost of a SIM free Samsung Galaxy S4 will be under £500, possibly under £475 which seems affordable for such a dream smartphone. Looking at what the Galaxy S4 has to offer, we think the smartphone market has been dragged up a notch.
Samsung Galaxy S4 – Slimmer and lighter with improved looks
The Galaxy S4 is both slimmer and lighter than the S3, which is an achievement when you consider the extra goodies Samsung has included for the S4. It’s still the same height but the depth is reduced to only 7.9mm, its overall size to 136.1mm by 69.8mm whilst the weight has dropped by a single gram to 130 grams.
The metal surround looks to have been beefed up which was needed after some industry drop tests had shown that the S3 was prone to drop-test damage at normal heights. The S4 retains its polycarbonate chassis and will initially arrive in “Black Mist” and “White Frost” colours, with more being added.
Samsung Galaxy S3 – the main camera
The main camera is 13 mega-pixels and the rear 2 mega-pixels. There is now a dual-camera mode which offers the ability to take video or still images with both cameras at the same time and blend them together. Multi-shot Mode is improved to take up to 100 photos in four seconds with Drama Shot providing a “collage” of your best ones.
You get 360 degree panoramic capture mode, an eraser feature ( to edit people out of your photos if desired ), auto LED flash and Story Album which lets you blend things like locations and notes.
Samsung Galaxy S4 – the other main features
Processor : As rumoured, the S4 in the UK will come with the Samsung Exynos 1.6GHz processor eight-core processor with 2GB of RAM and a choice of 64GB, 32GB or 16GB of on-board memory.
Display : The touchscreen display is confirmed as a 5 inch Full HD Super AMOLED with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a ppi of 441. The S3 had a ppi of 330 so this is a giant leap forward.
Connectivity : The Galaxy S4 is compatible with 3G, 4G LTE, Ultrafast and Wi-Fi.
Operating System : The Galaxy S4 comes with Android 4.2.2 ( Jelly Bean ) with an updated version of Samsung's TouchWiz sitting on top of the Android OS. S3 users who switch to the S4 will find the change a breeze from an operating system point of view.
Smart Pause, Smart Scroll and Air Gesture – Eye tracking software plus more - the new James Bond smartphone we think. Smart Pause will pause things ( e.g. a video ) when you look away, tilt the phone up or down and the eye tracker ( using advanced camera technology ) software will scroll the page for you automatically. Air Gestures lets you do some things by hovering your finger or hand as opposed to physically touching the screen in the normal way. So things like moving around a page or answering calls is a breeze.
Battery – The S4 packs a more powerful battery than the S3 ( 2,600 mAh to 2,100 ) which must be a good thing when you look at all the extra power gobbling features that come with the S4.
3G will look at the main features of the S4 soon and aim to get a review handset to complete our Samsung Galaxy S4 review at the earliest opportunity.
