The iPhone 5 is a top selling smartphone but have you ever wondered how well it would withstand an intense durability test. Imagine this. Back in September 2012, Android Authority arranged a drop test battle between the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 ( more here ) when the iPhone 5 was the winner and appeared to be virtually unmarked after three drop tests from 3 drop test heights.
Now imagine this. Take the same iPhone 5 that overcame the drop test above and put it through a series of durability tests. The test involved are : coffee drowning, scratch rumble and a water dunking.
The video below shows the full iPhone 5 test and although the iPhone 5 is not designed to be dust-proof and waterproof, like say the Sony Xperia Z , this is still a very interesting test. In the video, we see the iPhone survive the coffee test, survive the scratch rumble with only minor damage, but the water dunking does cause the iPhone to fail the test.
The water dunking involved being submerged in a water tank for 15 seconds and emerged still working. However, 5 minutes later it went “pete tong”. Problems with booting and the key buttons emerged. The device was then placed in dry ice for 24 hours in an attempt to dry it out but to no avail. The iPhone 5 failed the water dunking as you would fully expect.
It did pass the coffee spill test which is pretty impressive to us and maybe dropping your iPhone down the loo may not cause a failure so drastic as seen in the video.
3G completed its iPhone 5 Review here when we concluded “Of course there are the usual iPhone issues too – that fragile feel and the lack of a memory card slot, along with the wallet-busting price”.
