Well our understanding was that the Xperia X10 would receive no further updates, but this appears not to be the case. In a lengthy Sony Ericsson blog post, Rikard Skogberg, says that there will be an update from Android 2.1 Éclair to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The post is typical of Rikard in that its written in a Q and A technical way. However, this is what seems to be happening. Gingerbread wil be available sometime later than the summer. The benefits the update will bring are still not finalised as it is very much a new proposal from Rikard and Sony Ericsson.

The downside is that not all Gingerbread benefits will come with the update. In some ways this is perfectly understandable. At this stage, it appears that the following may be omitted or have limited capability : face recognition, Mediascape, Backup and Restore Client, HDMI out and more.

So X10 users happy to wait till after the summer will get a semi-Gingerbread update for their beloved Xperia 10.
