London Underground Stations to Get Wi-Fi Hotspots

The London Underground has invited tenders to bid for installing Wi-Fi hotspots in 120 of its stations with a target of going live in June next year. This is planned to be ready in time for the London Olympic Games in July 2012.

The tender is also asking companies how they could install Wi-Fi hotspots in bus and train stations and bus shelters. We reported that a Wi-Fi trial had been conducted at Charing Cross Tube.

The latest results from the trial has found that more than half of passengers felt that access to wi-fi would improve their experience of using the Tube.

Many people have also said they would like to see this service rolled out to more stations on the network and that connecting to a wireless broadband hot spot with a wi-fi-enabled device at a Tube station is very useful.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: 'The roll-out of wi-fi technology across the platforms and public areas of our Tube stations will finally allow Londoners to use mobile devices to pick up their emails, access social media sites and stay in touch with the world above while they traverse our subterranean transport network.
