Music Videos Delivered Over 3G Network

17th March 2003

QUALCOMM and Sony Music Entertainment (SME) announced that the two companies have successfully delivered SME music video content to CDMA2000 1xEV-DO trial users with BREW-enabled handsets. The success of these tests further underscores the value of the high- bandwidth capabilities of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, coupled with the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW) platform, for delivering compelling content to end users.

"CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and BREW provide us with highly effective technical and business solutions for the creation and wireless delivery of interactive multimedia content for music fans," said Thomas Gewecke, senior vice president, Sony Music Digital Services. "These technologies will represent an important new element of our mobile service business, and we look forward to using them to enhance our growing portfolio of wireless music content offerings."

"The success of this test with Sony Music Entertainment is very gratifying," said Gina Lombardi, senior vice president of marketing and product management, QUALCOMM Internet Services. "It further proves that offering dynamic multimedia content to consumers will be a winning proposition for major content providers such as Sony."

Deployments of the BREW solution continue as operators throughout the world join Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States, KTF in South Korea, KDDI in Japan, and China Unicom in commercializing BREW-based services. The Joint Venture between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom plans to roll out BREW services to subscribers in Latin America this month, and U.S. Cellular has launched a BREW user trial. More than 40 BREW-enabled handset models have been offered to consumers worldwide and more than 40 device manufacturers have indicated their interest in the BREW platform.

QUALCOMM's BREW solution is a complete product and business ecosystem for the development and over-the-air deployment of data services on wireless devices. The BREW solution provides the necessary tools and value-added services to developers, device manufacturers and wireless operators for applications development and distribution, device configuration, and billing and payment.

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology provides the highest spectral efficiency of any mobile, wireless wide-area network in existence today, supporting peak data rates up to 2.4 Mbps in a standard 1.25 MHz frequency channel. Optimized for the Internet, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO incorporates a flexible architecture based on standard Internet Protocols (IP).

Sony Music Entertainment Inc. (SMEI) is a leading global recording company. The three divisions of SMEI are: Sony Music (the U.S. recording company comprised of Automatic Productions, Columbia Records Group, Epic Records Group, Sony Music Nashville, Legacy Recordings, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Sony Disc Manufacturing, Sony Music Distribution, Sony Music Custom Marketing Group, Sony Music Studios, and Sony Wonder); Sony Music International (active in over 67 countries through its network of wholly owned subsidiaries, joint ventures and licensees); and Sony Classical, which
