In a globally anticipated conference Apple has announced the new version if its iPhone, the Apple iPhone 4.

The Apple iPhone 4 features a stunning new glass and stainless steel design and is the thinnest smartphone in the world.  The iPhone 4 is just 9.3 mm thick and the aluminosilcate glass is chemically strengthened making it 30 times harder than plastic.  For those of you who might worry about finger-marks on glass then don’t because the iPhone 4 has an oil-resistant coating that keeps it clean.

The improvements aren’t just in physical appearance because the iPhone 4 features the worlds highest resolution display that runs at a resolution of 960*640 pixels. This resolution has 4 times the amount of pixels than the iPhone 3GS (480*320).

Apple are calling this new screen technology “Retina display” and point out that its so dense that the human eye can’t make out individual pixels at normal viewing distance.

The camera on the iPhone 4 is also improved and is now a 5 mega-pixel offering which also has an LED flash. The iPhone 3GS only had a 3 mega-pixel camera. Additionally, the iPhone 4 now features a new front-facing camera.

The new front-facing camera is used for making video calls, which have now been added to the iPhone 4. The new technology called “FaceTime” enables you to easily activate video calling so you can see your friends and family anywhere using WiFi.

The 5 mega-pixel camera can also be used to record HD video and now utilises an LED light for night time shooting. The videos can then be edited using built-in software on the iPhone 4.

Other new improvements include improved battery time with talktime now improved by 2 hours. Additionally, the iPhone 4 also has a built-in 3 axis-gyro which enables 6-axis motion sensing for additional gestures and improved gaming performance.

The price in the US has been stated as $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB models on selected contracts. In the UK so far O2 and Orange have both confirmed they will be carrying the Apple iPhone 4.
