3G Application Center of Excellence in Beijing

2nd June, 2004

ASIA : Motorola, Inc. brought its vision of converged networks and seamless mobility to life at a two-day customer event held in Beijing.

Inset is Adrian Nemcek, executive vice president, Motorola who is quoted below.

At MOTOINNOVATION customers from the Asia Pacific region and beyond heard Mike Zafirovski, president and chief operating officer of Motorola, Inc., describe how Motorola was tackling the technological challenges to fulfill its vision of seamless mobility. Visitors also had a first-hand look at many of its leading edge technologies.

“Innovation and technological heritage are the twin pillars of Motorola’s foundation,” said Adrian Nemcek, executive vice president, Motorola, and president and chief executive officer, Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) which hosted the event. “It is this spirit of reinventing and challenging existing boundaries that sets us apart and which will continue to drive Motorola in the future of delivering seamless communications across multiple network technologies. We continually strive to offer innovative solutions that make things smarter and life better for our customers and consumers.”

Mobile Broadband
To demonstrate how it is positioned to deliver on its vision, Motorola showcased both its Mobile Broadband solutions - High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and CDMA2000 1xEV DO - during the event. HSDPA improves the performance of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks, bringing mobile broadband to the consumer with a simple, cost-effective upgrade to an operator's infrastructure. HSDPA enables, for example, a three to seven fold increase in downlink data speeds for the user, providing a mobile data experience similar to that of fixed line broadband. This means that consumers can enjoy a better user experience, while network operators benefit from a more efficient network and lower long-term hardware investment.

Leading Momentum with Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC) wins and innovation
Following recent announcements that it has won 12 contracts with customers operating in 18 countries and territories worldwide to supply PoC infrastructure solutions for both CDMA2000 1X and GSM/GPRS networks, Motorola demonstrated its innovative new Cross-Technology PoC solution.

This IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based Cross-Technology PoC solution, developed using Motorola’s softswitching expertise and IP network elements, works across any packet-based network, including WiFi. It enables subscribers to have "push-to" connectivity across and between GPRS, CDMA2000 1Xand WiFi networks thereby enhancing the roaming coverage area for PoC service. Designed to further Motorola’s goal of bringing the benefits of Push-To-Talk communication to consumers and enterprise users worldwide, the solution also will be compatible in the future with Enhanced Data Rate for Global Evolution (EDGE), HSDPA, Wideband CDMA/Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (W-CDMA/UMTS), and 802.16 “WiMAX” technologies.

This network-based Cross-Technology PoC solution functions using the Motorola IMS and can be upgraded to enable future ‘push-to’ enhancements and functionality such as Push-To-Video. It is aligned with Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) standards, and does not require modification to standards-based PoC clients.

Advancing 3G Research with China Applications Center of Excellence
Motorola also announced during MOTOINNOVATION that it has launched an Application Center of Excellence (ACOE) in China. This new ACOE will provide the dedicated resources of an applications development organization to research new wireless data services and help operators evaluate applications and integrate them into their networks. The Application COE was designed by Motorola in consultation with China’s leading telecom operators and 3rd party application developers.
