High-speed execution of Java applications on wireless phones
1st July 2002

OMRON announced that they have developed the most optimal Java[tm] processor for cellular phones and starts to provide its sample chips and evaluation kits for mobile device makers. The processor provides Java[tm] execution environment which enables to faster and comfortably run Java[tm] applications such as games and personal information manager (PIM).

The adoption of Java[tm] technology on cellular phones has made easier to download a various kind of applications. It goes without saying that the demands and importance of Java[tm] applications on cellular phones will increase more and more in the future. However, The comfortable execution of high functional applications on virtual machine (software) is going to be beyond its ability, especially, on cellular phones with limited resources. So, more rapid and comfortable environment for executing such high functional applications would be demanded on real machine (hardware).

JeRTy Processor, the companies have jointly developed, is the Java[tm] execution environment for the cellular phones, has the JavaTM bytecode execution core which can handle Java[tm] application faster, and has graphic engine which can process image data faster.

JeRTy Processor allows to implement the standard Java[tm] execution environment easily and in a short time. In addition, providing optimal execution environment satisfies customers more than before.
OMRON SOFTWARE starts to provide its sample chips and evaluation kits so that mobile device makers can evaluate JeRTy processor in trial development.

Features/Advantages

Enable high speed execution of Java[tm] application.

End users can enjoy high functional games and intuitive and easy-to-use graphical user Interface even on cellular phone, because the Java[tm] bytecode execution core and built-in graphical engine can execute such complicated software faster.

Support the standard J2ME CLDC/MIDP

JeRTy Processor conforms to standard specification of Java2 Micro Edition CLDC/MIDP proposed by Sun Micro Systems for mobile devices and the companies have its license certificate.
Mobile device makers can use it safely without worrying about the compatibility.

Subsystem structure makes easy to embed

It is easy to embed Java[tm] execution environment into cellular phones because of its subsystem structure which minimizes influence on own existing systems of mobile device makers.
Moreover, subsystem structure enables to make future update of Java[tm] execution environment in the field.

Custom chip with Java[tm] bytecode execution core available

The companies can develop custom chips with built-in Java[tm] processor. The technology is also provided as IP (Intellectual Property) so that mobile device makers can develop system LSI integrating their own existing resource and the JeRTy Processor core.

Roadmap

Applications which end users download into cellular phones are not be only games. The applications would be spread in the future as an interface-terminal on many kinds of devices, ID-terminal of society systems and, of course, tools for business and communication. The companies have a plan to enrich and enhance the built-in platform which uses Java[tm] execution core and to ship about 10 million processors until 2003.
