Three's have launched a new range of SIM plans that now come with tethering, free 0800 calls and new tools to monitor data usage. Nothing has changed for existing customers, but those who sign up to new plans also get more choice than ever before and the ability to use their data and call allowances in 17 countries worldwide.
Back in March Three rolled out new phone tariffs and one of the highlights of them was that customers could call 0800 numbers for free, but the change only applied to Pay Monthly plans that included a handset. Now Three has brought the same feature to its SIM-only plans, so new customers will be able to call 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers free of charge, while other 08 numbers, such as 084 and 087 will cost just 5p per minute.
Ultimately every network will have to do the same, as late last year OFCOM announced that from 2015 consumers will be able to call 0800, 0808 and 116 numbers free of charge from mobile phones, but Three is ahead of the game, even if only by six months or so.
That’s not the only change with these new SIM-only plans though. They also include spending tools, which for example let customers block spending on calls outside of their allowance or block premium rate calls and texts, which along with free 0800 calls makes it a lot easier to control your spending.
If you find that you don’t have enough data or minutes you can also move up to a larger allowance and keep your existing contract end-date by calling customer services. But seemingly you can’t move down to a smaller one, so it might be best to start small if you’re not sure what allowances you’ll need.
Speaking of allowances, you can choose either a one or twelve month plan with a choice of 500MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or unlimited data and 200, 600 or unlimited minutes. Though 500MB is only available on 12 month plans, with prices starting at £7 per month for 500MB and 200 minutes and going up to £23 per month for unlimited everything.
The cheapest one month plan is £13 and includes 1GB of data and 600 minutes, while those plans go up to £26 for unlimited everything.
On the new SIM plans you can also use your data towards a personal hotspot (aka tethering) whatever plan you’re on. Previously only those on the One Plan SIM only plans could use tethering, but one downside of the new plans is those on unlimited plans will now have their tethering capped at 4GB.
Let us not also forget that all Three customers can now use their allowance in 17 countries across the world, including the USA, Australia, France, Italy and the Republic of Ireland. Find out more about Three's Feel At Home roaming service here.
