Spotify: The Next Big Thing?

Spotify: The Next Big Thing?

30th July , 2009

Sweden : Spotify is a new application, built for the iPhone which is predicted to be the next big thing on the web.

Spotify enables users to stream music from their iPhone for free. The service is funded by advertisements that accompany the Spotify site. Advertisers already featured on Spotify include major worldwide corporations such as Ford, T-Mobile and Xbox.

Spotify has agreements with many major music publishers and has millions of tracks available. The following Music labels have already signed up : Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music Group, Merlin , CD Baby and The Orchard.

The adverts can be removed by paying a monthly fee of £9.99, which also enables you to stream the massive collection in higher quality. Additionally, users can choose to remove adverts with a day pass for 99p.

The official Spotify video can be viewed below.

Currently, the software is in a closed beta testing and initial reports have been very positive. Spotify has been submitted to become an approved Apple application and the results are expected soon.

Speculation is rife that Apple will reject Spotify in order to protect the revenue that Apple make from its own iTunes store. With many social network groups already formed to support Spotify and encourage Apple to approve the application.

Whether the device will be the rip-roaring success people expect remains to seen, as does Apple’s stance of applications that compete directly with its own.

Spotify is currently available (in closed Beta) in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France and Spain. An android version of the software is also in development.
