ZTE Ships World's Fastest 3G HSDPA Data Card to Europe

ASIA / Europe : ZTE announced that it has begun production of the first bulk consignment of its HSDPA data cards for use by major telecommunications companies in Europe. The MF330 is the fastest commercially available data card in the world, capable of download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps.

Earlier this year, ZTE became one of the first telecoms equipment developers to produce an HSDPA card with a downlink rate of 3.6Mbps. Following the successful commercial testing of the card in Europe, ZTE has now begun to receive bulk orders for its product from a number of European countries.

"Operators have realised that WCDMA networks cannot truly meet user requirements for mobile Internet services with a 384Kbps transmission rate," said Mr He Shiyou, SVP of ZTE and General Manager of the company´s Handset Division. "HSDPA on the other hand has the potential to drive the telecoms market to new heights by satisfying the need for faster connectivity. ZTE is playing an active part in helping the data revolution to take shape."

The commercial rollout of HSDPA, often referred to as upgraded 3G or 3.5G, is expected to take place in two phases. First, networks should achieve maximum downlink speeds of 1.8Mbps which, in line with the growth of HSDPA-enabled handsets, will then increase to 3.6 Mbps.


Additionally, as the evolved version of WCDMA, HSDPA can boost network performance for downlink packet traffic without requiring changes to legacy WCDMA architecture. In most cases, only simple network software upgrades need to be carried out.

By bringing the card into commercial use, ZTE is illustrating that HSDPA has already entered its second development phase. However, due to the limited availability of HSDPA enabled handsets, it is the data card rather than the handset which is the first volume form factor to incorporate the high-speed online download feature.

Whereas most data cards currently offer speeds of 1.8Mbps or 2.4Mbps, ZTE's MF330 is the first commercially available data card to provide enhanced functionality and speeds of up to 3.6Mbps.
