Hutchison 3G Awards Wireless Location-Based Software Contract To TCS
31st July 2002

TeleCommunication Systems announced that in the first quarter of 2002 it was awarded a contract to provide location-based software products and services to Hutchison 3G UK Limited ("Hutchison 3G").

This agreement for location software products and services represents one of the largest in the industry. The TCS Xypoint(R) Location Platform will initially be deployed in the UK and then in other countries where Hutchison Whampoa has 3G interests.

The Xypoint Location Platform (XLP) is built on TCS' Voyager architecture, which easily blends messaging and location applications and enables communications between disparate air interfaces - including analog, 2G, 2.5G and 3G technologies. The XLP supports any application requiring precise and immediate or deferred location data.

Additionally, the platform's architecture provides Hutchison 3G with a lower cost for deployment because it uses standard, off-the-shelf hardware.

Moreover, location based services and applications can be easily installed or removed from the XLP platform without expensive changes to the core location system.

Colin Tucker, managing director of Hutchison 3G, said, "Our location network needs to be reliable and scalable. TCS has a long history in the location business and has the experience and understanding to work closely with us to facilitate deployment of these services."

"TCS is proud to have been chosen as the wireless location technology provider for one of the most promising 3G carriers in the world," said Maurice B. Tose, president, chairman and CEO of TeleCommunication Systems. "This announcement heralds the introduction of TCS' Xypoint Location Platform into the international telecommunications market place, thus meeting the needs of global mobile operators who want to deploy value-added location-based services (LBS)."
