NTT DoCoMo, Inc. today announced a partnership with the Lucky Strike B.A.R Honda Formula One team to apply its mobile communications technology on Formula One racing circuits. In a technical alliance, DoCoMo and B.A.R will develop a circuit wireless communications system (CWCS)-a reliable, high-quality, high-security communications system for the extreme environment of 300kph+ speeds. Electronic noise and connection instability caused by high physical speeds have long been demanding challenges for mobile communications technology. DoCoMo will apply its experience and know-how, including its FOMA 3G service, in overcoming these challenges to develop reliable voice communications and two-way data telemetry* in this environment. Beginning with the Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka circuit on October 11, DoCoMo will provide a system to enable private voice conferencing among B.A.R pit crews (team director, engineers and mechanics). DoCoMo aims to add voice communication with drivers and two-way data telemetry in 2003. * Reliable bi-directional data telemetry allows teams to receive error-free data transfers from the cars, and send reliable command information to the cars to tune performance during the race.
