In their report dated July 22, 2002, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) recommends the use of 90 MHz of spectrum for advanced mobile services - with 45 MHz in the 1710-1755 MHz band matched by 45 MHz within the 2110-2170 MHz band. This spectrum, currently used by private and public sectors, will provide an appropriate solution that benefits wireless consumers, wireless carriers, the U.S. National Defense and economic growth in the U.S. Chris Pearson, Executive Vice President of 3G Americas stated, "Wireless services enhance the lives of 137 million Americans today. The additional spectrum identified by the NTIA plan will allow for the growth of existing services to more people and fuel opportunities for new, innovative, and advanced wireless mobile services and applications in the future. This is only the beginning of an important federal-industry effort that ultimately will provide consumers access to adequate 3G spectrum." Pearson added, "The 3G spectrum identified is significant as it will allow operators and manufacturers in the Americas to move forward with certainty in planning for the harmonized use of 3G spectrum with the rest of the world." |
