CITEL Confirms Membership of 3G Americas
19th July 2002
The Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL) of the Organization of American States has confirmed 3G Americas, a new wireless trade organization, as an Associate Member of their organization. 3G Americas will become an active supporter of CITEL's objective of promoting the continued development of telecommunications in the Western Hemisphere.

CITEL Executive Secretary, Clovis Baptista, welcomed 3G Americas to CITEL by noting the increasing importance of the wireless telephony in the region and the need for broad private sector participation. "CITEL's effectiveness as the premier regional telecommunications organization is enhanced by the full participation of private wireless organizations in our work programs," Baptista noted. "With wireless subscribers surpassing fixed line users in many countries," he continued, "it is not only desirable but necessary to integrate the wireless sector into our activities."

3G Americas will participate in deliberations of two of CITEL's permanent consultative committees "Public Telecommunications Services" and "Radiocommunications."

Chris Pearson, 3G Americas' Executive Vice President, called the CITEL decision "an important opportunity" for promoting the coordinated introduction of advanced wireless services throughout the Americas. Pearson continued, "3G Americas was created in March of this year to benefit the wireless industry and its customers in the Americas by working on common issues and opportunities, so we have a great interest in serving CITEL and its goals."
