The Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G Phablet has just been announced as expected at CES. It supersedes the Ascend Mate which was launched in January 2013 and Huwaei are quick to point out that the Mate2 comes with a compact design.
The Ascend Mate2 has an 84.7mm width, 9.5mm depth and a 3.1mm bezel frame. The screen to body ratio of the Mate2 is an impressive 79% which overpowers other contenders like the Apple iPhone 5S (62%) and the Galaxy Note 3 (76%).
Additionally, the company has incorporated best handling design practices to achieve its curved shape making it easier to hold in your hand.
The phablet comes with Android Jelly Bean (4.3) and Huwaei’s proprietary Emotion UI 2.0. With a new smartphone like this we would expect Huawei to issue an update to Android KitKat, but nothing has been confirmed so far.
6.1” Enhanced HD (EHD) Touch Screen Display
The display resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels which equates to a PPI of 241.
The display comes with LTPS technology, CABC technology and a full laminating screen. LTPS technology brings more dynamic and rich colours, is 20-30% more power efficient and has a faster response and is less reflective. CABC technology (Content Adaptive Brightness Control ) brings a sharper font effect which is more comfortable for the eyes.
Power & Battery Life
The processing power comes from its Qualcomm MSM8928 Quad-Core 1.6GHz Processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board memory.
The battery is a 4050mAh Li-Polymer which Huawei says enables you to surf the internet for half a day or listen to 100 hours of music before a recharge is needed.
Camera & Other Features
The main camera (rear) is a 13 megapixel SONY BSI Rear Camera, F2.0 aperture, 28mm wide angle lens and a 4cm macro mode. It offers 1080P FHD video recording.
The front camera is 5 megapixels with a F2.4 aperture and 1.4μm sensor. It comes with 10-level auto face enhancement, magic preview window and an 88 degree wide viewing angle.
The Ascent Mate2 is fully compatible with 4G LTE (LTE Cat4 150Mbps) which means you can download a single movie in one minute. It is also compatible with WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.
Price & Availability
Huawei has not announced a price or an on-sale date for the Ascend Mate2. However, the original Ascend Mate is currently available for £350 SIM free so we would expect a higher price than this.
3G will look into confirming the price and UK availability date and post further as soon as we can.< Back
