CES 2013 has begun and Huawei have unveiled a couple of new smartphones at the event including the Huawei Ascend Mate.
The Huawei Ascend Mate is a real monster because it has a 6.1 inch touch-screen which is the largest touch-screen ever seen on any smartphone. However, we think the Ascend Mate should be referred to as a "phablet" , because it's just 0.9 inches smaller than Google's Nexus 7 tablet.
6.1 inch IPS+ LCD Touch-screen Display
The 6.1 inch touch-screen display is undoubtedly the standout feature of Huawei's Ascend Mate . The whopping IPS+ LCD display runs at a HD resolution (1280*720 pixels) , which will provide stunning video playback, web-browsing and gaming experiences.
3G are a little disappointed that the display doesn't run at a higher resolution , but the power needed to drive such a large display is already very high. To increase the resolution further Huawei would have had to include an even bigger battery , which would have made the device incredibly bulky and heavy.
The Ascend Mate's display also includes "Magic Touch" technology which enhances the touch-screens responsiveness and even enables you to wear gloves while using the mobile. This is always a welcome addition especially on bitter Winter mornings.
Power & Battery Life
A 6.1 inch display requires a powerful processor and the Ascend Mate doesn't disappoint. Huawei's phablet is powered by Huawei's Hi-Silicon 1.5 GHz quad-core processor which features QPC and ADRX smart power-saving technology.
This keeps battery life down and enables the 4050mAh to provide 2 days standby-time and 22 hours talk-time. The smartphone also charges 30 per cent faster than any other smartphone !
Camera & Other Features
The Huawei Ascend Mate has a rear-facing 8 mega-pixel camera with HDR capabilities. That'll enable the smartphone to record full HD video and static shots which will look stunning even in the brightest lighting conditions. Additionally, it also features a front-facing 1 mega-pixel snapper for video calling.
Android Jelly Bean (4.1) comes pre-loaded on the smartphone and you can expect it be updated to the latest version shortly after its release. Huawei have unveiled that the Ascend Mate supports five frequency bands, but sadly they didn't give more details , but we hope it'll support both 3G and 4G.
Price & Availability
The Huawei Ascend Mate will be available to buy in China in February, but no information about a UK launch date has been disclosed. Sadly , we also don't have any details about the smartphones price, but we do know it'll be available in Crystal Black and Pure White.
3G's thoughts on the Huawei Ascend Mate
The folks at 3G are intrigued by the Ascend Mate, but we wish it had a higher resolution display and we're not at all sure it's got the clout to take on Samsung's Galaxy Note 2. Furthermore, the specification is incomplete and we're keen to learn more about its RAM, on-board memory and connectivity.
As soon as 3G get more news about the Huawei Ascend Mate you'll be the first to know.
