| Wi-Fi Wireless at Railway Stations |
|
22nd January , 2004 |
|
Europe : BT announced today that BT Openzone will be available at 13 key railway stations by spring of this year - with more to follow. The roll out will mean that passengers will be able to surf the web wirelessly at broadband speed from stations in the capital at Euston, Liverpool Street, Waterloo, Victoria, Fenchurch Street, Paddington, Cannon Street, and Charing Cross. In other parts of England, commuters and other passengers will be able to sample the benefit of BT Openzone service at Birmingham New Street, Leeds City, Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street. North of the border, Edinburgh Waverley will have its own BT Openzone access point. In addition, BT Openzone access points will be installed at London Bridge and Glasgow Central by summer, taking the total to 15 stations. Steve Andrews, managing director, Products, BT Mobile and Strategy, said: "Railway stations have always been a key target for BT Openzone and we are delighted to announce this roll out today. BT now has an unrivalled network of access points at all the premium travel locations, whether you take planes, trains or automobiles. "This
expansion forms part of our strategy of bringing increasing numbers
of access points to key locations. You can now realistically leave
your hotel, call into McDonald's for a coffee and catch your train
and all major stops on your journey will have a BT Openzone access
point." By the end of March, BT's network of Openzone access points will be more than 2,200, including airports, McDonald's restaurants, hotels and now railway stations. BT Openzone provides users with secure high-speed access to corporate networks and the internet. The service allows users to send and receive large quantities of information at broadband speed. The zones are clearly marked with a logo and will give remote access to anyone with a laptop or PDA which is Wi-Fi enabled. The BT Openzone access points will enable Network Rail's commuters to work effectively whilst on the move. All they need is a wireless enabled laptop or PDA and to be within range of one of the BT Openzone access points now available at key railway platforms. Passengers can work on their emails offline while on the train and then synchronise when they arrive at the station. |
