Singapore's
First Public 3G Video Calls |
16th January 2003 |
Inset is a picture of the actual 3G video call made by Singtel staff. Mr. Andrew Buay, SingTel's Vice-President of Consumer Marketing, explained how the tremendous level of support by its 3G trial vendors has made this event possible: "SingTel has been proactively working with 3G network vendors and developers to identify useful applications and build up competencies to operate and offer 3G services. Mobile video telephony has been identified as a differentiating 3G service that will benefit customers. It is even more personal than voice calls and offers a richer communications experience. For example, parents could see and talk to their children who are studying overseas. Couples can consult each other on their respective purchases even if they are not shopping together. A businessman can commute and yet be able to have face-to-face meetings with his partners. It could also be useful in emergency medical situations if a doctor cannot arrive quickly but is able to see and give advice in the meantime," Mr. Buay added. Mr. Claes Odman, President of Ericsson Singapore, said: "We are delighted to contribute and be part of SingTel's 3G mobile video telephony demonstration. Video telephony is a key application that will enhance end user experience. Through its continuous leadership in mobile communications, Ericsson is committed to support SingTel's in its evolution into 3G." In November of 2002, SingTel successfully completed 3G voice calls as part of its 3G trial. Local and overseas calls were made to test the quality of 3G voice calls, with three groups participating in the project: Ericsson, Nokia and a consortium comprised of Siemens IC Mobile, NEC Corporation and ITOCHU Corporation. All three trial systems were able to demonstrate mobile video telephony. SingTel expects to be able to offer 3G services on a selective basis in 2003. |
