The lack of NFC support, used for wireless payments in retail stores, is a long-running criticism aimed at Apple's devices. However, it looks as though Apple could be about to introduce their own wireless payment technology.
Rumours about Apple's plans to introduce wireless payments have been circulating for sometime and they've now been given added credence from Apple's CEO Tim Cook.
At a recent investor conference Cook told that “the mobile payments area in general is one we’ve been intrigued with”. He went on to add that “You can tell by looking at the demographics of our customers and the amount of commerce that goes through iOS devices versus the competition that it’s a big opportunity on the platform".
No details on how or when Apple plan to introduce wireless payments were revealed, but given that users credit/debit cards are already stored on iTunes, it should be that bit easier to roll out. Like other wireless payments solutions it's likely to include a wireless receiver installed at retailers and an application on a users device.
Apple have already been inviting retailers to take advantage of 'iBeacons', a new feature introduced in iOS 7 which detects when an iPhone is present in-store and then delivers relevant promotions and voucher codes using applications. It's already used in Apple's own stores and adding wireless payments to the mix seems like the next logical step.
The most likely time for Apple to introduce the new wireless payment technology is with the iPhone 6, which is expected to launch in the 3rd quarter of 2014. That might prove too soon for the technology to be debuted, but it looks as though Apple will add wireless payment support to their devices sometime in the future!
Rumours suggest that Apple will launch two different iPhone 6 models, a 4.8 inch version and a phablet version with a display around 5.5 inches. You can read more about Apple's rumoured next-gen iPhone 6 range here.
