Nokia To Release New Versions Of Maemo and Symbian In 2010
![]() |
The latest rumours suggest that Nokia will be launching a new version of its Maemo operating system in the second half of 2010.
Maemo 6 will be the successor to Maemo 5, which is the operating system that features on the Nokia N900. The Maemo operating system is made for smartphones and internet tablets and is open-source and based on the Debian linux operating system.
The Maemo 5 platform only runs on the Nokia N900 and has only been available for a couple of months. Its rumoured that Maemo 6 will launch on an updated version of the Nokia N900, the Nokia N920, although perhaps it will feature on multiple mobiles this time around.
This announcement is based on an interview conducted by Digitimes with Nokia’s General Manager in Taiwan. As well as the announcement of Maemo 6 he also confirmed a new version of the Symbian platform will launch in the 3rd quarter of 2010.
The Symbian platform is the most prevalent operating system in the world and features on over 100 million mobiles worldwide. The new version, which strangely will be called version 3, as Nokia have decided to jump over version 2, will have multi-touch support.
It was also confirmed that the 4th version of the Symbian platform will launch in early 2011.
