Mix of Hardware and Software for Super3G and 4G Wireless Standards

16th February, 2009

US : Wintegra’s WinPath family of processors and software has been selected by NEC Corporation for its high-performance LTE (Long Term Evolution) base stations. The new NEC platform utilizes Wintegra’s extensive LTE software and feature-rich hardware, enabling a low power, highly scalable, field upgradable “future-proof” base station architecture.

As part of the agreement, NEC has licensed the full set of Wintegra LTE software protocols and development environment, including both the eNodeB IPv4 and IPv6 transport protocols and the key LTE over-air protocols such as Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP), Snow3G encryption and Robust Header Compression (RoHC). Wintegra will also be providing NEC with key customization features required for major operators in Japan and abroad.

NEC has previously announced plans to ship its LTE base stations in late 2009, and will be showcasing wireless broadband products this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

“We are very pleased with our Wintegra relationship,” said Kazuya Hashimoto, General Manager of Mobile Radio Access Network Division, NEC, “and we believe the combination of low-power, scalability and programmability of the WinPath processors is an ideal fit for the evolving requirements of next generation wireless networks, including LTE.”

Wintegra is already shipping silicon and software for 2G, 3G, WiMAX and LTE base stations, and has announced a new generation of 4G-optimized WinPath processors that will continue to expand the reach of Wintegra in wireless broadband markets.

“As a leading participant in the 3GPP group that developed the LTE standard, NEC is committed to LTE solutions that feature the highest levels of quality, scalability and interoperability,” said Michael Phillip, Sr. VP and General Manager of Wireless Systems at Wintegra. “We will continue to aggressively develop 4G solutions that enable our key customers to minimize cost and shorten product development cycles.”
