| China Unicom to Kick off Video Phone Networks |

CHINA SinoCast - China Unicom completed the first stage of video phone networks and would put it into use recently. The capacity of first stage was 100,000 lines. The video phone had been used by corporate in video conferences. On February 13, 2003, Tian Wenke, general manager of Department of Data and Fixed Communications of China Unicom, declared the company had completed the testing of IP-based broadband video phone networks that is the biggest of the world. The networks can provide video phone services for corporate and residential customers in 330 cities of China. Sun Zhaoxin, director of International Section of Department of Data and Fixed Communications of China Unicom, said China Unicom had signed connection agreement of the networks with telecom carriers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and America. China Unicom would connect with more countries in the near future. Sun added that Taiwan and Hong Kong telecom carriers in the Yangtze River Delta and Zhujiang River Delta were demanding intensively for video phone services. And China Unicom was negotiating with many countries and regions for cooperation. Experts of the Ministry of Information Industry said it can be seen from the 3G mobile phones that video phone was new trend in the coming few years. The first target of video phone networks still was corporate customers. Each video phone had a unique IP address with dedicated Internet access. An IP address was like a telephone number. China Unicom would have the initiative in the fierce market with its networks resources. In October 2002, some customers tested the video phone service sales branches of China Unicom.
