Hutchison
3G Decline To Comment On Mast Trouble |

OPPONENTS of a controversial mobile phone mast scheme near Cave Hill, Belfast Northern Ireland today enlisted the help of Father Christmas. A local resident dressed as Santa was due to stand in a sleigh at the site of the proposed mast while concrete is poured round his boots. The Cavehill Residents Group say this symbolises their determination to "steadfastly" oppose the construction of the mast. Later Santa will step out of his boots and be replaced by a rota of other residents, in a bid to prevent building from commencing. In May, the Planning Service granted permission for telecommunications company Hutchison 3G to build the mast on the Cavehill Road footpath. A judicial review of the case is due to be heard in March but in the meantime Hutchison 3G will proceed with construction. Campaigners say that today's appearance of Santa was in response to a letter to from local children. A spokesman for Hutchison 3G said he had no comment to make on the protest. "We held an awareness forum last week. I am pleased to say it was very well attended by the residents. We assured them that we would convey their concerns back to the company and we have done that," he said.
