UbiNetics To Accelerate 3G Development in Taiwan

18th December 2002

3G technology company, UbiNetics, has licensed its WCDMA simulator and algorithm development tools to Taiwan's leading technology research institute. The deal is the latest development in UbiNetics' drive to become a major player in the Asian 3G market.

Inset is David You, vice-president of business development UbiNetics Asia who is quoted below.

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is a Taiwanese non-profit organization with responsibility for the country's technological development. ITRI first called upon UbiNetics' 3G technology expertise in 2001, when it licensed UbiNetics' 3G protocol software for use in Taiwanese-manufactured 3G handsets. The institute now plans to use UbiNetics' PL100 tools to accelerate the development of the WCDMA physical layer.

"We are pleased to extend our relationship with ITRI," said David You, vice president of business development Asia at UbiNetics. "This endorsement from the Taiwanese government really underlines our position as the IP supplier of first choice for 3G handsets and chipsets in Asia."

The PL100 tools and associated algorithms provide the blueprints for the core signal processing required to build a performance-compliant WCDMA chipset. The ITRI engineering team will use them to develop a complete chipset implementation that meets the necessary performance requirements of 3GPP. The tools also allow the ITRI team to simulate the effects of different design trade-offs, to ensure that they have an efficient solution that meets all the necessary 3GPP performance requirements.

"UbiNetics' technology will act as a catalyst to the institute, accelerating Taiwan's technological development and enabling Taiwanese companies to play a significant role in the 3G market worldwide," said Teddy Huang, deputy general director of the Computer & Communications Research Laboratories at ITRI.
