New 3G Partnership in OEM’ Building 3G Systems

9th December 2002

HSS announced that’s it has entered into a partnership with Creative Electronic Systems. As a part of this partnership, HSS' integrated IuPS, IuCS, Iub, Iur and Uu interfaces will be integrated through the Wintegra API for WinPath and will
be available on the CES Transport Network Solution board for building interfaces of the 3G Radio Network Controller (RNC), NodeB, Mobile Switching
Centre (MSC) and Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN).

The CES Transport Network Solution (TNS 4880) is an IP and ATM multi-service
platform for telecommunication equipment focusing on the Third Generation
Cellular (3G) arena. The innovative architecture of TNS allows easy
transition from ATM to IP and therefore ensures a smooth UMTS migration
path. TNS provides a world-class set of IP and ATM features for both
transmission and switching and includes interworking of ATM, POS and TDM and
ATM-IP transport media.

The partnership between CES and HSS augments an already strong relationship
between Creative Electronic Systems and Wintegra, who provide CES with its
range of WinPath Network Processors.

The integrated IuPS, IuCS, Iub, Iur and Uu interface products from HSS are
unique, as they go beyond the traditional offerings of standalone protocols
and augment the Wintegra low-level Datapath protocol modules and API’s.
These UMTS Iu/Uu interfaces enable plug-and-play interconnection of Radio
Network Controllers (RNCs) with Core Network nodes and NodeBs. Hughes
Software Systems has introduced the industry's first distributed and highly
scalable Iu interface solution, offered in both source and binary formats.
In addition, reuse of HSS’ SIGTRAN solution enables the Iu/Iur RNC
interfaces to support IP transports for next generation convergent networks.
These solutions enable OEMs to build high capacity 3G nodes faster.

The integration of HSS’ Iu/Uu interfaces on CES cards utilizing the flexible
Wintegra processor interfaces provide the benefits of both integration and
very high performance for OEM’ building 3G systems.

“The HSS Iu/Uu interface solution integrated with the proven CES Transport
Network Solution board will deliver significantly higher performance and
reduce time to market for our OEM customers, “ said Manoranjan Mohapatra,
Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President, Hughes Software
Systems. “ This integrated solution from CES, Wintegra and HSS is ideally
positioned for customers’ building Radio Network Controllers."

"CES provides a fully integrated hardware and software transport solution
for 3G vendors in a one-stop-shop approach, which will integrate excellently
with the higher layer suite of industry standard protocol stack offerings
from HSS" says Francois-Henri Worm, Director, Creative Electronic Systems.
“The combination of the CES Transport Network Solution and HSS’ 3G interface
software and the flexible on-chip interfaces on the Wintegra processors will
allow our customers to build 3G systems faster.”

"Wintegra developed the WinPath Network Processor range specifically for the
Access Infrastructure market and had a focus on providing a strong, cost
effective, flexible silicon architecture for companies to perform switching
and interworking of many protocols simultaneously" says Robert O'Dell, VP
Marketing of Wintegra. "Telecom Equipment Manufacturers and operators using
these configurable platform products from HSS and CES will be able to
utilize the flexibility of our on-chip interfaces in their platforms as the
transport network migrates towards IP from ATM".

3G Power Efficiency Truths
Lets start with the fundamental ‘laws of physics’ type of argument. The data rates used in 3G are much greater than for 2G (GSM) and therefore more sophisticated modulation schemes are employed to achieve this greater throughput.
