Samsung unveil first 4GB DRAM chip, looks set to debut on the Galaxy S5
The mobile world is rife with excitement about the potential unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S5 at CES 2014 next week. And Samsung have just amped up the excitement levels further by revealing the first 4GB DRAM chip.
Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 wowed the world with its 3GB of RAM, but that's quickly become old-hat thanks to Samsung's new LPDDR4 mobile chip. It not only offers the potential for more RAM, but provides 50% better performance than the fastest LPDDR3 (or DDR3) memory and consumes 40% less power.
For those of a more technical nature, Samsung's new chip is fabricated on 20-nanometer (nm) process technology and offers 1 gigabyte (GB) on a single die. So when you combine four of them you get a whooping 4GB of RAM, providing the highest level of performance available today.
“We will continue introducing the most advanced mobile DRAM one step ahead of the rest of the industry so that global OEMs can launch innovative mobile devices with exceptional user convenience in the timeliest manner.” said Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics.
Samsung Galaxy S5 to have 4GB of RAM?
In the accompanying press release Samsung added that "With the new chip, Samsung will focus on the premium mobile market including large screen UHD smartphones, tablets and ultra-slim notebooks".
The next premium smartphone to be unveiled by Samsung? Well, that's the Samsung Galaxy S5 which could be unveiled as early as next week at CES 2014 in Las Vegas.
The Korean companies next flagship smartphone is rumoured to have a 64 bit octa-core processor, a 5-inch 2560 x 1440p display and an innovative eye-scanner. The inclusion of 4GB of RAM would be another feather in the Galaxy S5's cap, which is looking increasingly like it could be the best smartphone the world has ever seen.
3G will bring you all the breaking news from CES 2014 as it happens. We've got our fingers crossed that'll include reporting on the official unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S5.
