A new report has suggested that the Apple iPhone 4S launch has been a huge success despite initial criticism that it was too similar to the iPhone 4.

Data obtained by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that Apple sold more iPhones in October than all of the Android smartphones put together. That gives Apple an amazing 42.8% share of the smartphone market in October, while Android lagged behind with 35%.

Apple will be hopeful they can continue to outsell Android , which is a huge feat considering the hundreds of Android smartphones available, including its closest rival the Samsung Galaxy SII.

However, a steep incline in sales is always expected when a new iPhone launches and it'll be interesting to see the final results for the next quarter.

In the last 12 weeks Android remained in the lead of Apple with a 46% market share (up from 34% last year), while Apple had 27.8 % which is up to 2.8% from last year.

3G would think that nearly everyone has a smartphone, but the figure still only sits at 44.8%. However, encouragingly smartphone sales made up almost 70% of all phones sold in the last quarter.

That still leaves a large market for Apple and Android to pentrate, although their are some people who'll never buy a smartphone.
