HP have announced that they have made their webOS operating system open-source.
The open-source agreement has yet to be finalised, but we assume it'll be similar to how Google licenses its Android platform.
HP will still invest in the operating system, just as Google does with Android, and hopes that developers will help them to improve the OS. HP also confirmed they'll be making ENVO, the application frame-work for webOS, available to developers in the coming weeks.
Interestingly, HP also confirmed they'll be using webOS in more devices in the future, but they have no idea when they'll be released. 3G expects a number of third-party tablets to launch running webOS over the next year, assuming the licensing agreement is favourable for small manufacturers.
Since HP bought Palm their have been a lot of changes inside HP which ultimately led to webOS being given a back seat, but the latest CEO is keen not to let the investment go to waste.
