ASIA : RF Micro Devices announced it is supporting the ramp of Huawei's U120E 3G multi-mode (UMTS/EDGE) handset with its RF3161 quad-band large signal polar modulation (LSPM) EDGE power amplifier (PA) module.

The RF3161 is the industry's smallest and thinnest EDGE PA in production and is designed to support all major merchant market 3G multi-mode handset platforms implementing LSPM EDGE transmit architectures. RFMD is ranked number-one in cellular front ends and is the leading supplier of EDGE and UMTS cellular front ends for 3G multimode handsets. RFMD is also the leading supplier of merchant market RF solutions that implement LSPM EDGE transmit architectures.

Eric Creviston, corporate vice president of RFMD's cellular handset products group, said, "We are very pleased to commence shipments of our RF3161 PA into Huawei's U120E 3G multi-mode handset. The RF3161 leverages RFMD's industry leadership in both EDGE front ends and merchant market LSPM EDGE RF solutions, including our latest EDGE RF solution, POLARIS(TM) 3. We continue to leverage our systems-level expertise and leadership in cellular front ends to design, deliver and support high performance products like the RF3161, which help handset manufacturers like Huawei to progress quickly and efficiently from layout to mass production of complex, next-generation handsets."

"We are pleased Huawei has selected the RF3161 to power their stylish U120E 3G multimode handset," said Paul Augustine, general manager, component solutions business unit at RFMD. "Handset manufacturers continue to select our linear EDGE and LSPM EDGE power amplifiers because of their superior efficiency and performance. We look forward to supporting Huawei with new and innovative front ends in future 3G multimode devices." The U120E is the successor to Huawei's high-volume U120 handset, which featured RFMD's RF3166 PowerStar(R) PA.

The highly integrated RF3161 is packaged in a compact 6 x 6 x1mm package, making it the smallest and thinnest EDGE PA module currently in production. RFMD anticipates new, incremental EDGE enabled handsets will feature its RF3161 as well as its high efficiency RF3159 linear EDGE PA.
