Samsung’s long awaited mini marvel is almost here, as the company has confirmed that the Galaxy S5 Mini will be landing in the UK on August 7th, which at time of writing is less than a week away.
It’s priced at £389.95 SIM free, so it’s a long way from cheap, especially now the Galaxy S5 has come down in price to the point where you can get it from around £420, but the S5 mini is smaller (4.5 inches to be precise), which will be appealing to some people, and it holds on to many of the best things about the Samsung Galaxy S5 such as its fingerprint scanner, its heart rate monitor and its IP67 certification, which means it can safely survive dust and water.
It’s not too shabby under the hood either, with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and 1.5GB of RAM. Plus there’s an 8 megapixel camera, 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot and a 2100 mAh battery and of course it supports 4G LTE.
At the same time as announcing the Galaxy S5 mini’s release date, Samsung revealed that the Galaxy Young 2 will be launching a week later. This phone is rather less exciting as it’s aimed squarely at the bottom of the market, thanks to a 1.0GHz single-core processor, a 3.5 inch display, 512MB of RAM, a 3 megapixel camera, a 1300 mAh battery, 4GB of storage and microSD card support.
Of course the Young 2 doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner or any fancy features and while the price hasn’t yet been confirmed we’d expect it to be very cheap when it launches in around two weeks. On the plus side it does at least run Android 4.4 and it comes with eight Gameloft games, which if the name didn’t already give it away marks it out as a phone aimed at a young audience.
