Femtocell Shipments to Surge
24th August, 2009
Sweden : Femtocell shipments will escalate to over twelve million units being delivered by the year 2014.
This is a forecast from Berg Insight who say that by this time there are predicted to be 6 femtocells for each base station ( macro ) and that the total number of regular users who will be connecting to femtocells by this time will be over 70 million.
Prime useage of femtocells will be to increase and improve indoor wireless coverage. The use of femtocells to improve network coverage or capacity is seen as a secondary useage because other alternatives are available.
Femtocells are small cellular base stations using broadband connections for backhaul, intended to extend coverage and offload the mobile macro network in home and small office environments. The European, North American and advanced markets in Asia Pacific will account for the vast majority of femtocell shipments in the foreseeable future. In many other countries worldwide, the penetration of fixed broadband connections is much lower and 3G services less developed.
Marcus Persson of Berg Insight said “For the moment, many people are not willing to install yet another box in their homes unless it can add significant value beyond what Wi-Fi already brings today. The femtocell concept is still at an early stage with few commercial deployments. It will take several years before shipments of femtocells become substantial”
