T-Mobile Demonstrate HSDPA

8 August , 2005

Europe : During a meeting with business customers in Rotterdam, T-Mobile Netherlands was the first mobile provider to give a live demonstration of the possibilities of HSDPA in practice.

HSDPA proved to be a lot faster than the other technologies demonstrated, EDGE and basic UMTS. With HSDPA it is possible to provide mobile broadband at ADSL speed. UMTS as it is now on the market does not provide this. T-Mobile Netherlands has therefore decided to immediately provide its UMTS network with HSDPA, so that they can offer services with actual mobile broadband. This fall business users will be able to extensively test HSDPA. In 2006, T-Mobile will introduce HSDPA on the Dutch market.

Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Director Technology T-Mobile Netherlands: "T-Mobile wants to be able to offer customers real mobile broadband at a speed comparable to what they are used to at home and at work. We are already doing that now with the largest national network of HotSpots where mobile Internet users can make use of a very high speed broadband connection via Wi-Fi. In this way they can make full use of Internet services, their email, calendar or the company network. With HSDPA we will add to that service with a very high speed network whereby customers can also have mobile broadband outside the HotSpots. This makes Internet at ADSL speed actually mobile. We are very pleased to be the first Dutch mobile provider to be able to demonstrate in practice that HSDPA actually provides a broadband experience which is in all aspects comparable to what they are used to at home, in the office or at a T-Mobile HotSpot."

In 2006, T-Mobile will introduce mobile broadband on the basis of HSDPA in the Dutch market. HSDPA when launched will have a download speed of 1.8 megabits per second. That is circa fives times as fast as UMTS and eight times as fast as EDGE. In the future the speed of HSDPA will be gradually increased.
