UK : Elan has just launched the VMB5000, the world's first multi-function bridge chip designed to exceed the data transfer speed requirements of current 3G wireless datacards and beyond with 20MB/S host interface capability.

A single chip solution, it is a true multi-function device aimed at 3G/WLAN Combi cards, and is designed to greatly simplify the card design process. In addition to its high speed performance, the chip offers 16 bit PCMCIA stability and very low power consumption.

Great flexibility for card designers is provided with a choice of client interface including USB or UART. The 2 x 16K bytes FIFOs deliver sustained throughput of up to 10MB/S with UART or 12 MB/S with USB. Additionally, there is a SMART card interface mode and support for popular synchronous local bus protocols.

Packaged in a 9mm x 9mm x 1.1mm 64 pin x 1.0mm VQFN, this device offers a uniquely simple and particularly cost effective solution for wireless data card designers. A full reference kit is available to facilitate the test and design process.
