Inset is Mark Ferguson of Padcom, who is quoted below. Law enforcement and public safety agents can access applications any time and any where via today's commercial, always-on 3G networks at speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second, which is up to eight times faster than CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) networks that have traditionally been used. These 3G networks can be enhanced in the future to support super-fast data speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second. "Because of its impressive speed, inherent security and ubiquitous coverage, 3G mobile high-speed data is the perfect solution for agencies that are looking to migrate their CDPD applications to a more advanced and versatile wireless platform," said Jeff Cortley, director of offer management, Lucent Technologies' Mobility Solutions Group. "The speed of 3G technology enables new applications that cannot be delivered by slower wireless data networks, and these enhancements can improve efficiency, speed up decision-making, and enable public safety personnel to spend more time on the road and less time at the agency location." "One of the key requirements for public safety agencies as they transition from CDPD is maintaining static IP addressing functionality, which is necessary for establishing secure, always-on connections using various types of wireless networks and devices," said Mark Ferguson, director of marketing, Padcom, Inc. "Our static IP addressing capabilities will be integrated into Lucent's 3G mobile high-speed data portfolio - making it possible for agencies to take full advantage of 3G technology, while maintaining support for the static IP address requirements of their existing and future applications." Using Lucent's commercial 3G network equipment and the Sierra Wireless AirCard®, a wireless wide-area network card, live demonstrations at Lucent's booth (#2247) include: · Innovative Systems' Clique Video Messenger, which integrates instant messaging with low-bandwidth video and audio. Demonstrations will show how Video Messenger can provide real-time remote expertise and information including video clips and photos to law enforcement officials during an "Amber Alert" scenario. · MapInfo's Critical Area Response Manager application, which shows how first responders can receive highly detailed, critical infrastructure intelligence to aid in planning, prevention, detection, response and recovery from threats and disasters. · Padcom's TotalRoam® Mobile Connectivity Suite, which intelligently switches laptop network connections between various public safety data networks, including 3G networks. This demonstrates how law enforcement officials can have secure mobile access to critical data any time and any where. · Ricoh's 3G-ready digital camera, which allows public safety officials to capture sounds, digital images or videos and instantly share them with others via a 3G wireless connection. In one demonstration, the Ricoh camera is used by a law enforcement official to capture digital images of a criminal suspect and send them to a remote server with facial recognition technology. The server compares the images against a criminal database, and then sends a message back to the Ricoh device stating the results of the comparison. Lucent Integrates TotalRoam® Mobile Connectivity Suite with Its 3G Portfolio Lucent also today announced plans to integrate Padcom's TotalRoam® Mobile Connectivity Suite with its 3G mobile high-speed data portfolio of end-to-end solutions to address the specific mobile data needs of the public safety sector. These solutions will allow public safety personnel to securely access essential applications, such as state and national criminal databases, via 3G UMTS and CDMA2000® mobile networks, as well as agency wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) and other wireless public safety data networks. Lucent's portfolio enables mobile professionals to use their laptop PCs or PDAs to access all the applications they normally use, with the same level of security, data throughput and performance they typically experience at their agency location. The Padcom® TotalRoam® Mobile Connectivity Suite is important to the public safety sector because it establishes a static Internet Protocol (IP) address for a public safety agent attempting to obtain information from an agency database via a wireless connection. This static IP address adds a level of security because it helps to ensure that the official making the request via a wireless connection from his or her laptop or PDA is the same individual who receives the requested information. The TotalRoam® solution also enables the laptop to maintain a seamless and secure mobile data connection via a mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN), even as the network connection is switched between various wireless data network types. Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group is a leading global provider of mobile networking technologies, having deployed more than 80,000 spread-spectrum base stations for mobile operators worldwide, of which 40,000 are already supporting 3G services. |
