3G WCDMA Interoperability Tests

4th August 2003

ASIA : Huawei Technologies, today announced that the company has completed the Interoperability Test (IOT) on the WCDMA Iur interface with Nortel.

Iur is the standard interface between two Radio Network Controllers (RNCs) of the WCDMA system. It is defined by 3GPP to enable the smooth interoperation among RNCs from different vendors in a UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). The openness of the interfaces gives operators maximum flexibility on choosing network elements when deploying their WCDMA networks.

Huawei has also completed the IOT on the other interfaces of WCDMA with Nortel, including the Iu interface between the WCDMA Core Network (CN) and the UTRAN, the MAP C/D and Gr interfaces in the Core Network. What is more remarkable is that the roaming and handover tests between Huawei's WCDMA and Nortel's GSM systems have also been successfully conducted, and vice versa. All these tests have been performed according to the international standard of Network Vendor Interoperability Test (NVIOT).

"Openness is an important benchmark for the maturity of a network solution,"said Mr. Yu Chengdong, Vice President in charge of research and development at Huawei,"And it is of great importance to the success of a telecom system. Huawei believes that with the close cooperation of the entire industry, the prosperity of 3G market is sure to come."

Being a leading global vendor of the mobile networks, Huawei plays a proactive and practical role in the standardization campaign of 3G. In other story, Huawei, together with other four leading vendors, has established a new industry cooperation, Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI), aiming to define a publicly available specification for the key internal interface of radio base stations.
