HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2

HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2

The HTC One M8 is a big deal. It’s the latest, greatest smartphone from the Taiwanese company and it’s the successor to the acclaimed HTC One. There’s a lot riding on it and a lot of expectations, but for the most part it lives up to them.

Then there’s the Sony Xperia Z2. It’s a phone which was announced with less fanfare than the HTC One M8 and which follows its predecessor by a matter of months but it’s no less impressive for it, with a great build and top flight specs. So which of these two super phones is the best? Read on to find out.

HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 - Build

HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2

The HTC One M8 is a thing of beauty. It’s 90% metal, with just a little sliver of plastic at the top and bottom. It really is the most premium looking phone on the planet, though at 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4mm and 160g it’s a little chunky and heavy. But if it was any lighter it would feel odd, as you expect weight from metal.

The Sony Xperia Z2 is quite a high quality device too. It has metal edging and a glass back, giving it a premium look and feel. It doesn’t visually impress as much as the HTC One M8 but it’s definitely one of the better looking phones around. At 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2mm it’s a similar size overall, but slightly slimmer. It also has a similar amount of weight to it at 163g. One thing the Xperia Z2 has going for it that the One (M8) doesn’t is that it’s IP58 certified dust and water resistant.

So really it comes down to whether you’d rather have a slightly better looking device or a slightly more durable one.

HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 - Display

The HTC One M8 has a 5 inch 1080 x 1920 Super LCD3 screen with a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch, while the Xperia Z2 has a 5.2 inch 1080 x 1920 IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 424 pixels per inch. So the Xperia Z2 is a little bigger while the HTC One M8 is a little crisper. Beyond that there’s not much to choose. Both are incredibly high quality screens.

HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 - Power

The HTC One M8 has a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor and 2GB of RAM, while the Sony Xperia Z2 has a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM. Both handsets are very powerful, but with its extra gigabyte of RAM the Sony Xperia Z2 comes out on top.

HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 - Camera

The HTC One M8 has a 4 UltraPixel duo camera, which is a slightly misleading term as actually only one of the sensors is used for picture taking. The other is used to adjust the focus of the shot after an image is captured. It’s a neat feature but it means that in terms of megapixel count there’s no change between the HTC One and the One (M8). Backing up the main camera it can also shoot 1080p video at 30fps and has a 5 megapixel front facing camera, making it one of the best phones for video calls.

The Sony Xperia Z2 has a rather more impressive 20.7 megapixel main camera. It doesn’t have any fancy dual sensor technology but the quality of the photos it can take is higher than on the HTC One (M8). It can also shoot 2160p video at 30fps, 1080p video at 60fps and has a 2.2 megapixel front facing camera.

HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 - Battery life, memory and connectivity

The HTC One M8 has a 2600 mAh battery capable of up to 496 hours of standby or 20 hours of talk time, which makes it well above average overall. The Sony Xperia Z2 has a far bigger 3200 mAh battery which can manage 740 hours of standby or 19 hours of call time, so in standby it’s a lot better but in use it’s a little worse.

The Xperia Z2 comes with 16GB of built in storage while the HTC One M8 has a choice of 16 or 32GB built in, while both support microSD cards of up to 128GB.

Their connectivity options are almost identical, as both support Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC, but the HTC One M8 also has an infrared port, which the Sony Xperia Z2 doesn’t.

HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 - Conclusion

The Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One M8 are incredibly well matched. They have similarly good screens and batteries, while the Xperia Z2 has a better camera and a little more power and the HTC One M8 is a little better looking, has an infrared port and potentially more storage.

The Xperia Z2 is slightly more durable thanks to being dust and water resistant but the HTC One M8 has better speakers. So while there are differences between the two it’s hard to pick a clear winner with both having stunning designs and high-end specs.

The Sony Xperia Z2 is a great phone and is the better device on paper, but we love the aluminium design of the HTC One M8 and the direction HTC is taking with its software, including Blinkfeed and the HTC Zoe camera software. With so little between them this gives the HTC One M8 edge in our eyes. But whichever of the two you choose you've made a great choice.
