The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom was a little unusual to say the least. Essentially it was more smart camera than smartphone, just one that you happened to be able to make calls on (and look very silly in the process), but it filled a niche which had been left largely empty so it’s no surprise that Samsung is working on a follow-up.
That follow-up might not be far away either as the first purported image of it has been leaked online and it certainly looks convincing. The design doesn’t look a million miles away from last years model but it’s noticeably quite a lot thinner and the camera lens doesn’t seem to stick out as much, giving it a sleeker form factor, making it more pocket friendly and, importantly, making it look more like a phone and less like a camera.
The only other things that can really be gleaned from the image is that it will have a 10x optical zoom and looks like it has a Xenon flash.
It’s worth noting though that while the image itself doesn’t ring any alarm bells the source of the image does, as it’s just an incredibly basic one page website going by the name ‘KZoom’ and consisting of the leaked image and little else. So we have no idea who actually found the picture. As with all such leaks you’re best taking it with a pinch of salt, but if it’s a Photoshop job it’s a good one.
This isn’t the first we’ve heard of the Galaxy S5 Zoom either. Previous rumours point to a 20 megapixel sensor (up from 16 on the S4 Zoom), a 4.8 inch 720p display, a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and Android KitKat on board, which, along with the more appealing form factor, could be enough to help it break beyond the niche it’s created for itself and into the mainstream, though it’s not a phone that’s ever likely to challenge the full fat Galaxy S5.
Stay tuned for more news because it’s thought that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom could be officially unveiled very soon.
